Saffron (Crocus sativus)
A bulbous cultivated plant from the Iridaceae family, blooming in autumn, 20–30 cm tall, from the Crocus genus, and the spice obtained from this plant. The leaves of the plant are ribbon-like, and its purple flowers have three stigmas. The male organs, including the petiole that connects the flower and stigmas to the plant, are dried and used especially as a food coloring and flavoring. The saffron plant is mostly grown in Spain, France, Italy and Iran.
